Biography
My name is Danny Lau. I am so honored and happy being part of the Seven Spears Martial Arts instructor staff. I am a full time student in the Gracie/ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program here at Seven Spears Martial Arts and an assistant coach in our Jiu Jitsu kids classes! I am also a proud BJJ dad with both of my young sons in the Jiu Jitsu kids classes.
My martial arts practice began at the age of 10 in Shaolin Kung Fu at the Tai Yim Hung Fut Kung Fu school. After 6 years of training I started learning Tae Kwon Do for 2 years at the Jhoon Rhee TKD academy. At the age of 18 after high school I joined the United States Marine Corps and started training in Burce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do and Muay Thai boxing. After the Corps and while in college I became a dedicated student and instructor of Thaiboxing and JKD under Master Mike Moses at the Yamaski / Evolve Academy in Maryland. From JKD I also fell in love with Kali/ Escrima knife and stick fighting arts.
For about 11 years I slowed down my martial arts training and dove into CrossFit and and became a fitness coach and athlete while creating a full time career with the #1 company in golf Titleist in Carlsbad, California. Getting married to my wonderful wife and having two rad little boys is a dream come true for me.
I always knew and felt that I had one missing part of my game and martial arts training and that was the ground game. Because all my training in my younger years was stand up and striking I let my ego win and just brushed off the ground game even tho deep down inside I knew I was lacking and how effective Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was with the proof of MMA and the UFC showcasing that we need to have training in all areas and ranges where a fight could happen, for sport or self-defense. How lucky was I to find Professor Rodrigo Munduruca and his jiujitsu school in the spring of 2018.
At the age of 5 and 7 I took my two sons to Professor Rod and his Gracie academy in Poway and was blown away by his teachings and knowledge. I had legit stuck a gold mine in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu right in my hometown. My sons trained for 4 months and all the while I watched and secretly wished I was on the mats learning with them. But my ego and age, 51 at the time, was always my excuse. The Professors would always gently ask me to come train but I always stupidly said thanks, but no thanks.
One day my youngest asked me “Daddy, how come we do Jiu Jitsu, but you don’t do Jiu Jitsu?…” And the rest is history! I knew I had to at least give it a good try now that my kids called me out! ? But to my surprise I fell in love with the art and the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle. 3 years into the art, going strong and learning to improve myself everyday- I give all the praise to our Professor Rod, fellow instructors, students and the amazing community at Seven Spears Martial Arts for keeping me in the game.
If you want a martial arts school that will teach you and your kids REAL martial arts and a super supportive academy, community and friendly safe environment to train look no further than Seven Spears Martial Arts. See you on the MATS!
